EHR 4161

New Holland EHR 4161 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 Over Voltage

Issue description

The voltage signal on the circuit for the 5th rear electro-hydraulic remote valve is too high (exceeding the normal operating range). This is typically caused by a short to battery voltage, an open ground circuit, or a failed potentiometer/sensor within the remote valve or the in-cab control switch.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Rear Remote No. 5 valve slice at the rear of the tractor for physical damage, corrosion, or pinched wires that could cause a short to power.

  2. Perform a Circuit Isolation (Swap Test) by swapping the electrical connector from Remote No. 5 with an adjacent, known-good remote (such as Remote No. 4). If the fault code changes to the new remote, the issue is internal to the valve slice/potentiometer. If EHR 4161 remains, the issue is in the wiring harness or in-cab control switch.

  3. Attempt to stroke the valve back and forth to clear any debris, then run the EHR valve calibration procedure via the tractor's display to see if the controller can re-establish a baseline neutral set point.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Address the Harness/Switch

    If the fault stayed with the wiring during the swap test, trace the wiring harness from the EHR controller to the rear remote block. Repair any frayed wires or shorts to power. If the wiring is intact, replace the in-cab EHR control switch or armrest potentiometer for Remote No. 5.

  3. Address the Valve

    If the fault followed the valve during the swap test, remove the electrical connector from the Rear Remote No. 5 valve slice. Unbolt the faulty EHR valve slice/potentiometer assembly from the rear hydraulic distributor block. Install the replacement EHR valve slice or potentiometer and torque to OEM specifications.

  4. Re-calibration

    After replacing the valve, switch, or repairing the harness, you must assign the correct valve address and perform the CAN-based EHR valve calibration using the tractor's display monitor so the controller can learn the new spool travel limits and neutral position.
