New Holland EHR 4162 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Remote) module: Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Deflection Too Short
Issue description
The electronic controller has commanded the spool inside the 5th rear remote hydraulic valve to move, but the internal position transducer (LVDT) detects that the spool did not travel the expected distance (deflection is too short). Alternatively, it indicates an electrical short circuit within the valve's deflection coil/solenoid.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve on the rear valve stack for corrosion, bent pins, or rubbed wires that could cause a short circuit to ground or power.
Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the deflection coil on the #5 valve. If the resistance is out of specification, it indicates a dead short and the coil/solenoid is the culprit.
Check the tractor's hydraulic filters and fluid for signs of severe contamination, which can cause the spool to bind inside the valve body.
Attempt to run the EHR remote valve calibration procedure through the tractor's in-cab monitor (e.g., IntelliView / Pro700). If calibration fails on valve #5, it confirms a hard mechanical bind or a failed position transducer/coil.
Repair steps
Relieve Pressure
Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/buttons to relieve all residual hydraulic pressure in the system.
Disconnect Electronics
Disconnect the electrical harness from the #5 rear remote valve section.
Remove the Valve Section
If the electrical tests point to an internal failure or mechanical binding, remove the tie bolts holding the rear remote valve stack together and carefully extract the #5 valve section.
Inspect and Clean
Inspect the internal spool for scoring, metal shavings, or debris. If the spool is simply stuck due to minor debris, cleaning the spool and valve bore may resolve the issue.
Replace Components
If the deflection coil is shorted, the position transducer has failed, or the spool/bore is heavily scored, replace the entire remote valve section (electro-hydraulic valves are often serviced as a complete section because the internal processor and transducer are calibrated to that specific valve body).
Reassemble the Stack
Install the new or cleaned valve section into the stack. Ensure all O-rings between the valve sections are replaced and properly seated. Torque the tie bolts to the manufacturer's specifications.
Reconnect and Calibrate
Reconnect the electrical harness. Turn the tractor's key to the ON position. You must perform the EHR Valve Calibration procedure using the in-cab display. Because each valve has a built-in processor, the system must assign the valve its number (Valve No. 5) and learn the new spool travel limits.
