EHR 4163

New Holland EHR 4163 – EHR (Electronic Hitch / Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Deflection Excessive

Issue description

This code indicates that the internal spool of the 5th rear electro-hydraulic remote valve has deflected (traveled) beyond its expected or commanded position. This is an internal valve fault, likely a mechanical issue (such as a stuck or over-traveling spool) or a failure of the valve's internal position transducer, causing the valve to shut off the output stage as a safety precaution.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T8 Series (e.g., T8.300, T8.360)
  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland T6000 Series
  • New Holland T7000 Series
  • New Holland MXM / TM Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for Manual Override: Verify if the valve has been operated manually, which can trigger spool position errors (often accompanied by code EHR 4165).

  2. Voltage & Harness Testing: Check the supply voltage to the valve (must be between 8V and 36V/45V). Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to Rear Remote No. 5 for corrosion, bent pins, or short circuits.

  3. Transducer Verification: Check if related codes are present, such as EHR 4167 (Position Transducer Faulty) or EHR 4168 (Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral).

  4. Calibration Attempt: Connect a diagnostic tool and attempt a dynamic calibration of the EHR remote valves. If the controller cannot learn the neutral and maximum deflection points, an internal mechanical fault is confirmed.

Repair steps

  1. Depressurize the System

Turn off the tractor and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system.

  2. Disconnect Electricals

Unplug the electrical harness connector from the Rear Remote No. 5 valve section.

  3. Remove the Valve Slice

Remove the hydraulic lines connected to the No. 5 remote. Remove the tie bolts holding the rear remote valve stack together. Carefully slide out the faulty Rear Remote No. 5 valve section.

  4. Prep and Install

Clean the mating surfaces of the adjoining valve slices. Install the new remote valve section, ensuring that all O-rings and seals between the slices are brand new and properly seated.

  5. Reassembly

Reinsert and torque the valve stack tie bolts to the manufacturer's exact specifications to prevent leaks or spool binding. Reconnect the hydraulic lines and the electrical harness.

  6. Fluid and Calibration

Top off the hydraulic fluid. Start the tractor and check for leaks. You must use the dealer diagnostic tool to perform the EHR remote valve calibration procedure so the EHR controller can learn the new valve's spool travel limits.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the EHR 4163 fault code and test the operation of Remote No. 5.
