EHR 4164

New Holland EHR 4164 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller: Rear Remote No.5 - Open Center Position Not Reached

Issue description

The electronic control system has detected that the hydraulic spool inside the #5 rear remote valve has failed to return to or achieve its neutral (open center) position. This is typically caused by mechanical binding of the spool, a broken centering spring, or a failure within the valve's electronic position transducer.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7
  • New Holland T8
  • New Holland T8.330
  • New Holland T8.360
  • New Holland T8.390
  • New Holland T9

Check the cause

  1. Check for associated codes on the #5 remote (e.g., EHR 4166 or EHR 4167) to isolate the issue to electronics rather than mechanical binding.

  2. Inspect the 4-pin electrical connector at the #5 rear remote valve on the rear frame harness for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins.

  3. Attempt to actuate the valve manually using the manual override to feel for physical binding or a stuck spool.

  4. Attempt to run the EHR Remote Valve Calibration procedure via the Tractor Control Unit (TCU) / IntelliView display to see if the controller can relearn the center position.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, lower all implements to the ground, relieve all hydraulic system pressure, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate valve

Locate the #5 rear remote valve slice on the rear hydraulic stack.

  3. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the 4-pin electrical harness from the remote valve actuator/transducer.

  4. Remove cap

Remove the electronic actuator/solenoid cap from the rear of the valve body.

  5. Inspect spool and spring

Inspect the internal spool and centering spring. Check for hydraulic system debris, metal shavings, or scoring that is preventing the spool from physically returning to neutral.

  6. Clean or replace valve slice

Clean the spool and bore. If the spool is heavily scored, the valve slice must be replaced.

  7. Replace actuator or assembly

If the spool moves freely and the centering spring is intact, the internal position transducer has failed. Replace the electronic actuator head or the complete remote valve assembly.

  8. Reinstall components

Reinstall the components and reconnect the 4-pin electrical connector.

  9. Calibrate valve

Power on the tractor, clear the stored fault codes, and perform the EHR remote valve calibration via the cab display so the module can learn the new open center position.
