New Holland EHR 4168 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote): Rear Remote No.5 - Spool Cannot be Brought Back to Neutral

The electronic controller has commanded the #5 rear remote hydraulic valve to return to its center (neutral) position, but the internal position transducer/sensor detects that the spool has not physically reached the neutral set point. This is typically caused by a mechanical bind inside the valve (such as a broken return spring or debris), a faulty position potentiometer, or a failed electronic actuator (powerhead).

   Inspect the wiring harness and the 4-pin electrical connector at the No. 5 rear remote valve for corrosion, pushed pins, or wire chafing.

   Swap the electrical connector (and powerhead if accessible) between the No. 5 remote valve and a known working remote (such as No. 4 or No. 1). Turn the key on. If the fault code changes to the new valve location (e.g., EHR 4180 for Remote No. 4), the electronic actuator or valve spool is faulty. If the EHR 4168 code remains, the issue is in the tractor's wiring harness or the EHR controller itself.

   Attempt to run a remote valve lever and spool travel calibration via the tractor's instrument cluster/display. If the spool is physically stuck, the calibration will fail.

   Check the hydraulic fluid for heavy contamination, which can cause the tight-tolerance spools to stick in the valve bore.

   Relieve hydraulic pressure

   Lower all implements to the ground, turn off the engine, and cycle the remote levers/switches to relieve all hydraulic pressure from the system.

   Clean valve stack

   Thoroughly clean the exterior of the rear remote valve stack to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system during disassembly.

   Disconnect electrical harness

   Disconnect the electrical harness from the No. 5 remote valve section.

   Remove tie-bolts

   Remove the tie-bolts securing the remote valve stack together.

   Remove faulty valve section

   Carefully slide the faulty No. 5 valve section out of the stack.

   Install replacement valve section

   Install the replacement remote valve section (or replace the electronic powerhead/actuator if available separately for your specific valve block). Ensure all O-rings between the valve slices are replaced and properly seated.

   Reinstall tie-bolts

   Reinstall the tie-bolts and torque them to the OEM specification found in your specific model's service manual.

   Reconnect electrical harness

   Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Perform spool travel calibration

   Power on the tractor and navigate to the diagnostic/calibration menu. You must perform a spool travel calibration so the EHR controller can learn the neutral, extend, and retract limits of the new valve.
