EHR 4173

New Holland EHR 4173 – EHR (Electronic Hitch/Hydraulic Remote) Controller or ARM (Armrest Controller): Rear Remote No.2 -Lever Not Calibrated

Issue description

The electronic controller has lost the calibration values (the learned minimum, maximum, and neutral positions) for the second rear remote hydraulic control lever/paddle located on the armrest. This can happen due to a memory loss in the controller, a voltage spike, or a failing potentiometer inside the lever assembly.

Applies to these machines

  • New Holland T7 Series
  • New Holland T8 Series
  • New Holland T9 Series
  • Versatile 250
  • Versatile 280
  • Versatile 305

Check the cause

  1. Check the No. 2 remote lever on the armrest for physical damage, binding, or debris. Ensure the lever springs back to the exact center (neutral) position freely.

  2. Look for accompanying fault codes like ARM 9013 (Controller Memory Error - Loss of Aux Remote Lever Calibrations). If present, the controller may be losing memory due to low battery voltage or a failing module.

  3. Check the wiring harness beneath the armrest for open circuits or shorts to the No. 2 lever potentiometer (which would typically trigger related codes like EHR 4174 or 4175).

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, apply the handbrake, and lower any hydraulic equipment to the ground. Ensure the hydraulic oil is at normal operating temperature.

  2. Enter Calibration Mode

Access the tractor's diagnostic/calibration menu. On older models, this is done by installing a diagnostic tool/jumper (Tool No. 380000488 or 4FT.950) into the diagnostic plug, or by holding the up/down shift buttons while starting the engine to access the 'H' menu on the instrument cluster. On newer models (e.g., IntelliView displays), navigate to the 'Calibration' menu directly on the monitor.

  3. Select Remote Calibration

Navigate to the specific calibration routine for the Electro-Hydraulic Remote (EHR) levers.

  4. Perform the Sweep

Follow the on-screen prompts. You will be asked to move the No. 2 remote lever through its full range of motion: push it fully forward (extend/float) and pull it fully backward (retract).

  5. Set Neutral

Allow the lever to spring back to the neutral position. Do not touch the lever while the system saves the neutral setpoint.

  6. Save and Test

Save the calibration and cycle the key. Test the No. 2 remote to ensure the fault code has cleared.

  7. Replacement

If the calibration fails or the code immediately returns, the potentiometer inside the lever is faulty, and the lever assembly must be replaced. After replacement, you must repeat the calibration procedure.
