New Holland EHR 4220 – EHR (Electro-Hydraulic Remote) Control Module: Rear Remote No.5 - Valve Spool Not Calibrated
Issue description
The controller has lost the calibration values for the 5th rear remote proportional valve spool, or a new, uncalibrated valve has been installed. Without these calibration values (which map the spool's neutral, maximum extend, and maximum retract positions), the remote valve cannot function properly.

Check the cause
Recent Service Check: Determine if the rear remote valve #5 or the EHR controller was recently replaced, or if the tractor's software was recently flashed, which can wipe calibration memory.
Wiring & Connection Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connector at the #5 rear remote valve for corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins that could cause a loss of communication.
Operating Temperature: Ensure the tractor's hydraulic fluid is at normal operating temperature. Cold, thick hydraulic oil will skew the spool travel timing and cause calibration to fail.
Valve Number Assignment: Each electro-hydraulic remote valve has a built-in processor. If the valve was replaced, verify that the processor has been digitally assigned its position number (in this case, Valve No. 5) in the remote stack.
Repair steps
Warm Up the System
Start the tractor and operate the hydraulics until the fluid reaches normal operating temperature.
Assign the Valve Number (If Replaced)
Replacement valve assemblies are supplied "blank" with no number assigned. Use the dealer service tool (EST) to program the valve's processor so it identifies itself as Valve No. 5.
Set Engine Speed
Set the tractor engine to the normal operating RPM specified in the service manual. This is critical because the calibration of the control levers is based on a time interval corresponding to how long it takes the cylinder rod to extend and retract.
Enter Calibration Mode
Access the tractor's calibration menu via the IntelliView display or the dealer service tool.
Run the EHR Calibration
Select the calibration procedure for Rear Remote No. 5. Follow the on-screen prompts to actuate the valve. The system will automatically stroke the spool to learn the neutral, extend, and retract parameters.
Verify
Save the calibration, cycle the key, and verify that the EHR 4220 code has cleared. If the calibration repeatedly fails, the valve actuator is likely mechanically binding or has a failed internal position transducer, requiring replacement.
