New Holland ENG 1013 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Battery 5 V Reference2 Circuit High
Issue description
The ECM detects voltage on the 5V Reference 2 circuit that is higher than the expected 5 volts (typically shorted to a 12V battery source) or there is an open circuit causing the ECM to see a high voltage on its internal pull-up resistor.

Check the cause
Ensure the battery is fully charged and cables are clean and tight, and verify that the ECM ground connections are clean, tight, and in their proper locations.
Inspect the ECM harness connectors (J1 & J2) for dirt, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Perform a sensor isolation drop test: turn the ignition ON (engine off), monitor the 5V Reference 2 voltage, and unplug sensors on the circuit one at a time. If voltage returns to 5.0V, the unplugged sensor is internally shorted.
If all sensors on the circuit are unplugged and the voltage remains high, trace the engine wiring harness looking for chafe marks, melted loom, or pinch points indicating a short to a 12V power source.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery terminal before repairing any wiring.
Address the Short
If a sensor failed: Replace the internally shorted sensor identified during the isolation test. If the harness failed: Locate the short-to-voltage in the wiring harness. Repair the damaged wire using OEM-approved methods (solder and heat-shrink tubing or weather-pack replacement terminals).
Reassembly
Reconnect all sensor connectors and the negative battery terminal.
Clear Codes
Connect a diagnostic scan tool, clear the ENG 1013 fault code, and cycle the ignition.
Verification
Start the engine and verify that the 5V Reference 2 circuit reads a steady ~5.0V and the fault code does not return.
