New Holland ENG 1014 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Power-Supply Voltage: Out of Voltage - High
Issue description
The system voltage has exceeded the maximum safe operating threshold (typically > 16.0V or > 16.5V) while the engine is running. This condition is almost universally caused by an overcharging alternator (due to a failed internal voltage regulator) or a severe ground fault causing the regulator to misread the system voltage.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- L220
- SR175
- B90B
- B100B
- T-series
- TN-series
Check the cause
Perform a static battery test with the engine off (should read around 12.6V)
Perform a running voltage test across the battery terminals (readings above 15V-16V indicate overcharging)
Inspect the battery for signs of boiling, bulging, or a sulfur (rotten egg) smell
Check ground connections between the alternator case, the engine block, and the chassis frame
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.
Clean All Grounds
Locate the main heavy ground strap that connects the engine block (often near or under the alternator) to the tractor frame. Remove the connections, wire-brush the terminals and mounting surfaces down to bare metal, and reinstall tightly.
Retest System
Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and test the voltage again. If the voltage returns to a normal 13.5V - 14.8V range, the bad ground was the issue.
Replace the Alternator
If the alternator is still pushing 16+ volts after cleaning the grounds, the internal voltage regulator has failed. Replace the alternator assembly (or the voltage regulator, if your specific model allows it to be serviced separately).
Replace the Battery (If Necessary)
If the battery was subjected to prolonged 16V+ charging, it is likely internally damaged or boiled dry. Load test the battery and replace it if it fails.
Clear Codes
Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 1014 fault code from the ECM.
