ENG 1015

New Holland ENG 1015 – ENGINE (Engine Control Unit / ECU) or IC (Instrument Cluster): Power-Supply Voltage: Out of Voltage - Low / Cluster Battery Monitor: Under Voltage < 11.5 volts

Issue description

The system voltage supplied to the control module has dropped below the critical operating threshold of 11.5 volts. This is typically caused by a weak battery, a failing alternator, a faulty ignition switch causing a voltage drop, or corroded ground/power cables.

Check the cause

  1. Use a digital multimeter to check the battery voltage at the terminals (should read ~12.5V when resting, and must not drop below 10.5V during engine cranking)

  2. With the engine running, test the voltage at the battery to check the charging system (alternator should output between 13.5V and 14.5V; below 13V indicates a failing alternator)

  3. Inspect the battery terminals, clamps, and the main earth/ground strap connected to the chassis or engine block for heavy corrosion or loose connections

  4. Check the ignition switch for worn internal contacts by looking for flickering dashboard lights, which can momentarily drop power to the ECU when the machine vibrates

  5. Trace the wiring harness supplying power to the Engine ECU and Instrument Cluster to ensure there are no frayed wires or corroded connector pins

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the machine, remove the ignition key, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Clean Connections

    Remove the battery terminal clamps and clean both the posts and the clamps with a wire brush. Locate the main ground strap on the chassis, remove the bolt, clean the contact area to bare metal, and retighten securely.

  3. Replace the Battery (If Applicable)

    If the battery failed a load test or cannot maintain a charge above 11.5V, remove the battery hold-down bracket, extract the old battery, and install a new heavy-duty tractor battery.

  4. Replace the Alternator (If Applicable)

    Disconnect the negative battery cable. Release the tension on the serpentine/drive belt and remove it from the alternator pulley. Disconnect the electrical plug and the main power wire from the rear of the alternator. Remove the mounting bolts and extract the faulty alternator. Install the new alternator, torque the mounting bolts, reconnect the wiring, and reinstall the drive belt.

  5. Replace the Ignition Switch (If Applicable)

    If voltage drops are traced to the cab, remove the steering column/dash trim, unplug the ignition switch connector, and swap in a new switch.

  6. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and verify that the system voltage now reads correctly (above 11.5V, ideally ~14V while running). Use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 1015 fault code from the ECU memory.
