New Holland ENG 1040 – ENGINE: Engine RPM Over Speed
Issue description
This fault code indicates that the engine speed has exceeded the maximum overspeed warning limit programmed into the engine control module. This can be triggered by a mechanical overrun (such as an operator driving down a steep grade or downshifting improperly), a runaway engine condition caused by combustible fluids (like engine oil from a blown turbo seal) entering the intake, or an erratic signal from a failing engine speed sensor.
Applies to these machines
7 machines- L220
- SR130
- SR160
- SR175

Check the cause
Review Engine Event Hours using a diagnostic tool to determine if the overspeed was a temporary operational error or a recurring mechanical issue.
Inspect the intake system (turbocharger, charge air cooler, and intake manifold) for excessive engine oil, which can cause a runaway engine condition.
Inspect wiring harnesses, connectors, and wire ties for the crankshaft and camshaft speed sensors for chafed wires or loose connections that could send erratic RPM spikes.
Repair steps
Operational Reset
If the diagnostic data confirms the overspeed was a one-time operator-induced mechanical overrun, no physical repair is necessary. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC Eraser to clear the code from the engine ECU to resume normal operation.
Turbocharger Replacement
If oil ingestion is found: Disconnect the battery. Remove the intake piping and charge air cooler. Clean all residual oil from the intake tract thoroughly to prevent a secondary runaway event. Unbolt and replace the failed turbocharger. Reassemble the intake and verify the engine oil level.
Speed Sensor Replacement
If sensor failure is diagnosed: Locate the camshaft or crankshaft speed sensor on the engine block. Cut the wire ties securing the harness and unbolt the main connector bracket. Remove the retaining bolt for the sensor and pull the sensor out of the block. Install the new sensor, torque the bolt to OEM spec, and reconnect the wiring harness.
Final Verification
Clear the DTCs from the Engine ECU and test run the machine under load to ensure the code does not return.
