New Holland ENG 1053 – ENGINE controller (EDC): CAN Bus Communication: CM1BC Timed Out
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) has lost communication with the Body Computer or Vehicle Control Module (VCM) over the CAN bus network for a specific message frame known as "CM1BC". The ECU monitors received CAN messages for timeouts. When the CM1BC message is not received within the expected timeframe (typically 5 seconds), this fault is triggered.

Check the cause
Check the installation and proper connection of both the Engine Control Unit (EDC) and the Instrument Cluster / Body Computer to the CAN vehicle network
Inspect the CAN cables between the Body Computer and the Engine ECU for disconnected connectors, broken wires, or chafing
Test the CAN bus wiring harness for short circuits (CAN High to Ground, CAN Low to Ground, or CAN High to CAN Low)
Verify the correct operating conditions and CAN configuration of the CAN controller within the Body Computer

Key Off and Disconnect
Turn the machine off and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during testing.
Visual Inspection
Locate the main wiring harness connecting the Vehicle Control Module/Body Computer to the Engine ECU. Visually inspect for pinched wires, rodent damage, or rubbed-through insulation.
Connector Maintenance
Disconnect the harness at the Engine ECU and the Body Computer. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals. Clean with contact cleaner and apply dielectric grease if necessary.
Continuity and Resistance Testing
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins at the diagnostic port. A healthy CAN bus should read approximately 60 ohms (indicating both 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact). Perform a continuity test on the specific CAN wires from the Body Computer to the Engine ECU.
Repair Wiring
If a break or short is found in the harness, repair the damaged section of the wire using OEM-approved splicing methods, or replace the affected harness section.
Module Configuration/Replacement
If the wiring and terminating resistors test perfectly, the fault lies within a defective CAN controller in either the Body Computer or the Engine ECU. The Body Computer's CAN configuration should be verified via a dealer diagnostic tool (like CNH EST). If a module has internally failed, replace the module and flash it with the correct machine dataset.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the DTCs and verify the CM1BC message is now being received.
