Issue description
This fault indicates a loss of communication on the J1939 CAN bus specifically regarding the "ET1" (Engine Temperature 1) message. When this code is logged, the receiving module has not received the ET1 message within the expected timeout period (typically 3 seconds).

Check the cause
Check the CAN bus wiring between the Engine ECU and the Instrument Cluster/Vehicle Control Module for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins
Measure the resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms)
Check the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (SPN 110) and its pigtail for shorts to ground or open circuits, and verify resistance against temperature specifications
Ensure the Engine ECU is receiving proper unswitched and switched voltage
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes during testing.
Inspect Harnesses
Visually inspect the main engine wiring harness, specifically routing near the thermostat housing (where the coolant temperature sensor is located) and the main ECU connectors.
Test the Coolant Temperature Sensor
Disconnect the coolant temperature sensor. Check for moisture or corrosion inside the connector. Measure the sensor's internal resistance. If it is completely open or shorted, replace the sensor.
Repair CAN Wiring
If the CAN bus resistance test fails, trace the CAN lines to locate the break or short. Repair the wiring using OEM-approved splicing methods and heat shrink.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery. Use a New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) or a compatible CAN-bus DTC eraser to clear the active and stored fault codes.
Verify Repair
Start the engine and monitor the Instrument Cluster. Verify that the engine coolant temperature gauge is reading correctly and that the ENG 1054 code does not return. If the wiring and sensors are perfect but the ECU still fails to broadcast ET1, the Engine ECU may require a software reflash or replacement.
