New Holland ENG 1059 – ENGINE: Timed Out of CAN message: DM1

The CAN (Controller Area Network) bus has gone 5 seconds without receiving the DM1 (Diagnostic Message 1) broadcast, indicating a loss of communication between the engine controller and the rest of the machine's network.

   Verify ECU Power and Ground: Check the fuses and relays supplying power to the Engine ECU. If the ECU is not powering up, it cannot broadcast the DM1 message.

   Inspect CAN Bus Wiring: Check the CAN High and CAN Low communication lines between the Engine ECU and the Instrument Cluster/UCM. Look for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to power.

   Check Terminating Resistance: With the battery disconnected, use a multimeter to check the CAN bus resistance (typically around 60 ohms) to ensure the network's terminating resistors and wiring are intact.

   Inspect the Hitch SLIP Switch (Tractors Only): On certain New Holland tractors, check for a failure or short in the Hitch SLIP switch circuit, which can disrupt network communication.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the machine's battery to ensure safety and prevent electrical spikes during inspection.

   Inspect Connectors

   Locate the Engine ECU and the main Vehicle Control Module (UCM) or Instrument Cluster. Disconnect the harnesses and inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or backed-out terminals. Clean and reseat the connectors.

   Trace the Harness

   Visually inspect the wiring harness routed along the chassis for chafing, pinch points, or melted insulation.

   Repair Wiring

   If any CAN bus wires are damaged, repair them using appropriate twisted-pair splicing techniques to maintain network integrity.

   Test/Replace Hitch SLIP Switch

   If working on a tractor and the wiring is intact, test the Hitch SLIP switch for proper operation. If it is internally shorted or malfunctioning, replace it.

   Clear Codes and Test

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool or DTC eraser to clear the fault codes. Cycle the key and run the machine to verify that the DM1 communication is restored and the code does not return.
