New Holland ENG 115 – ENGINE (ECM / Engine Control Unit): Engine Speed Sensor or Cam Sensor Failure

The Engine Speed Sensor (on 8.3L or 9.0L engines) or the Cam Sensor (on 15L engines) has failed. The engine controller is no longer receiving a valid signal from the sensor to determine the engine's RPM or camshaft position, which is critical for fuel injection timing and overall engine operation.

   Inspect the wiring harness leading to the Engine Speed Sensor or Cam Sensor for chafing, breaks, or melted insulation.

   Disconnect the sensor and check the pins for corrosion, moisture, or poor terminal tension.

   Use a multimeter to check for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to voltage in the sensor wiring back to the Engine ECM.

   Remove the sensor and inspect the tip for physical damage or metal debris, which could indicate an issue with the internal tone ring/gear.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Engine Speed Sensor (typically on the engine block near the flywheel/crankshaft on 8.3L/9.0L engines) or the Cam Sensor (near the camshaft gear on 15L engines).

   Disconnect Harness

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Remove the Sensor

   Unscrew the retaining bolt(s) securing the sensor to the engine block and carefully pull the sensor out.

   Clean the Port

   Wipe the mounting port clean, ensuring no dirt or debris falls into the engine.

   Install New Sensor

   Insert the new sensor into the port. If it requires an O-ring, ensure it is lightly lubricated with clean engine oil before insertion.

   Secure and Reconnect

   Tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification and plug the electrical harness back in.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool (like the Jaltest or New Holland Electronic Service Tool) to clear the ENG 115 fault code.
