New Holland ENG 1257 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / Engine ECU: Control Module Identification Input State Error
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) is receiving data on its identification input pins that is erratic, intermittent, or incorrect. This often points to a mismatch between the ECM and the machine's monitor/controller, an incompatible controller on the network, or a physical wiring issue on the identification circuit.
Applies to these machines
2 machines- New Holland T8000 Series Tractors
- New Holland Combines (e.g., CR9090, CX8080 Elevation, CX8090 Elevation)
Check the cause
Inspect the ECM wiring harness and connectors for physical damage, corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out pins.
Verify that no incorrect or incompatible monitors/controllers have been recently installed on the machine's CAN bus network.
Test the control module identification input pins on the ECM harness for open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to battery voltage.
Look for additional active J1939 network communication errors or sensor supply voltage faults, which could indicate a broader harness failure.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery ground cable before servicing the ECM or electrical system.
Harness Repair
Disconnect the ECM harness. If corrosion or damaged wires are found on the identification input circuits, clean the connectors with contact cleaner or splice/repair the damaged wiring using OEM-approved repair pigtails.
Verify Controller Network
Ensure all connected modules (Armrest, Instrumentation, Transmission controllers) are securely plugged in and are the correct part numbers for the machine.
Test and Clear
Reconnect the battery and turn the ignition ON. Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the New Holland Electronic Service Tool) and attempt to clear the code.
Reprogram ECM
If the wiring is intact but the code remains active, the ECM may have lost its calibration or is experiencing an engine code incompatibility. Reprogram/flash the ECM with the latest OEM calibration.
Replace ECM
If the ECM cannot be reprogrammed or the internal hardware has failed, replace the Engine Control Module.
