ENG 131

New Holland ENG 131 – ENGINE Controller: Decelerator or Hand Throttle (STD cab) Position potentiometer voltage is too high.

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the hand throttle (or decelerator) potentiometer has exceeded the maximum expected range. This typically indicates that the sensor has failed internally, the ground circuit has an open connection, or the signal wire is shorted to a power source.

Check the cause

  1. Verify if the hand throttle position potentiometer is out of calibration or mechanically misadjusted, causing it to travel past its maximum voltage range.

  2. Inspect the wire harness running from the Engine Controller to the hand throttle position potentiometer for an open circuit (especially on the ground wire) or a short to a 5V/12V power source.

  3. Back-probe the sensor to test if it is outputting a smooth, linear resistance/voltage. If it has dead spots or reads out of range, the potentiometer has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Access the Component

Locate the hand throttle lever assembly inside the standard (STD) cab.

  2. Disconnect

Unplug the 3-terminal electrical harness connector from the hand throttle potentiometer.

  3. Remove the Sensor

Unthread or unpin the faulty potentiometer from the hand throttle linkage/control assembly.

  4. Install the New Part

Securely mount the replacement OEM potentiometer into the linkage to ensure stable micro-positional tracking.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the 3-terminal electrical connector back into the sensor.

  6. Calibrate

Use the tractor's onboard display (e.g., AFS Pro / IntelliView) or a diagnostic tool to perform a hand throttle potentiometer calibration. This ensures the Engine Controller learns the minimum and maximum voltage sweeps of the new sensor.

  7. Clear Codes

Clear the ENG 131 fault code from the Engine ECU and test the throttle response to confirm the repair.
