ENG 143

New Holland ENG 143 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Oil Pressure level has fallen below the warning limit.

Issue description

This code indicates that the engine oil pressure has dropped below the safe operational threshold programmed into the system. This condition can be triggered by actual low oil pressure (due to low oil level, a clogged filter, or a failing oil pump) or by a false reading from a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor or damaged wiring.

Check the cause

  1. Check Oil Level: Park the machine on a level surface and use the dipstick to verify the engine oil level. Top up if it is low.

  2. Inspect Filters and Leaks: Check the engine oil filter for clogs or damage, and inspect the engine block for visible oil leaks.

  3. Inspect Sensor and Wiring: Locate the engine oil pressure sensor. Check the electrical connector and wiring harness for corrosion, oxidation, loose connections, or poor grounds, which frequently cause false low-voltage readings.

  4. Verify Actual Pressure: Connect a mechanical oil pressure gauge to the engine block to test the actual physical oil pressure. If the mechanical gauge shows normal pressure, the sensor or its wiring is faulty. If the mechanical gauge shows low pressure, the engine has a mechanical issue (e.g., failing oil pump, blocked oil pickup tube, or worn engine bearings) that must be addressed immediately to prevent catastrophic engine failure.

Repair steps

  1. Prepare machine

    Ensure the machine is turned off, the key is removed, and the engine has cooled down.

  2. Locate sensor

    Locate the engine oil pressure sensor on the engine block.

  3. Disconnect wiring

    Carefully depress the locking tab and disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove faulty sensor

    Using an appropriate wrench or deep socket, unscrew the faulty oil pressure sensor from the engine block. Have a rag ready to catch any minor oil drips.

  5. Install new sensor

    Thread the new OEM oil pressure sensor into the port by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten it securely to the manufacturer's torque specification.

  6. Reconnect wiring

    Reconnect the electrical harness connector, ensuring it clicks firmly into place.

  7. Verify repair

    Start the engine and monitor the dashboard. The oil pressure warning light should turn off, and the ENG 143 fault code should change to an inactive state.

  8. Clear fault code

    Clear the stored fault code from the Engine ECU using a diagnostic tool or the in-cab monitor (e.g., IntelliView / AFS Pro).
