New Holland ENG 147 – Engine Control Unit (ECU) / Engine Controller: Frequency Throttle Signal shorted high
Issue description
The engine controller has detected a frequency above a calibrated maximum value at the frequency throttle signal pin (specifically pin 4 of the engine harness). When this fault is triggered, the system enters a protective state where the engine will default to low idle and will not respond to changes in the frequency throttle.

Check the cause
Inspect the engine wiring harness, specifically tracing the frequency throttle signal circuit (pin 4 of the engine harness). Look for chafed insulation, melted wires, or pinch points where the signal wire might be shorting to a 12V power source or another high-voltage line.
Disconnect the frequency throttle sensor and the Engine ECU. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or bent terminals that could bridge connections.
Using a multimeter, test the frequency throttle signal wire for a short to voltage. Measure the frequency/voltage output directly at the sensor to determine if the sensor is outputting an out-of-range signal, or if the harness is introducing the short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the machine and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical damage during testing.
Isolate the Short
Disconnect the harness from both the frequency throttle sensor and the Engine ECU.
Test the Harness
Probe the signal wire (pin 4) for continuity to battery positive. If continuity to voltage is found: The wiring harness is shorted. Locate the damaged section of the harness and repair the wire, or replace the affected harness section. If no short is found in the wiring: The internal circuitry of the frequency throttle sensor has likely failed and is shorting high internally.
Replace the Component
Install a new frequency throttle sensor (or repair the harness as dictated by step 3).
Reassemble and Clear Codes
Reconnect all harnesses and the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 147 fault code.
Verify Repair
Start the engine and test the throttle. Ensure the engine responds normally to throttle inputs and no longer defaults to low idle.
