ENG 155

New Holland ENG 155 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / ECM): Intake Manifold Temperature level has exceeded the warning limit

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) detects that the intake manifold air temperature has exceeded the critical engine protection limit (e.g., greater than 132°C / 270°F for 5 seconds), which triggers the STOP ENGINE lamp, reduces engine torque/speed, and may shut down the engine.

Applies to these machines

  • T8000 series (T8010, T8020, T8030, T8040)
  • TM series
  • T6/T7 series
  • MX/TG series
  • CR series combines
  • FR forage harvesters

Check the cause

  1. Verify sensor accuracy using a thermocouple or infrared thermometer near the sensor to compare actual temperature against the Electronic Service Tool (EST) reading.

  2. Check engine thermostat operation to ensure it opens and closes correctly, as a stuck thermostat can cause actual overheating.

  3. Inspect the engine compartment for excessive heat (above 93.3°C / 200°F) and ensure the sensor is not exposed to an unshielded heat source like a cracked exhaust manifold.

  4. For Cummins-based engines, check the sensor date code for TSB140060 (part 4921483 manufactured between Jan 23, 2014, and May 1, 2014, had high early-life failure rates).

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn the key switch to the 'OFF' position and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

  2. Locate the Sensor

The intake manifold temperature sensor is typically located on the side of the intake manifold, either near the middle or toward the rear of the cylinder head (depending on the specific engine displacement).

  3. Remove the Sensor

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the sensor. Use a wrench to carefully unthread and remove the faulty sensor from the manifold.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Thread the new sensor into the intake manifold and tighten to the OEM torque specification.

  5. Reconnect

Plug the wiring harness back into the sensor, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place. Reconnect the battery.

  6. Clear Codes and Validate

Connect your Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the inactive fault codes. To validate the repair, perform a key cycle, start the engine, and let it idle for at least 1 minute. Ensure the code changes to INACTIVE and the STOP ENGINE lamp turns off.
