ENG 1802

New Holland ENG 1802 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) OUT Temperature Sensor: Out of Voltage - Low

Issue description

The engine control unit is receiving a voltage signal from the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor (EGTS) located at the outlet of the DPF that has fallen below the minimum acceptable threshold. In a 5-volt reference system, a "Voltage Low" condition typically indicates a short to ground within the sensor itself, a short to ground in the wiring harness, or a completely failed sensor element.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness leading to the DPF OUT Temperature Sensor for heat damage, melting, or chafing against the chassis.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-out terminals.

  3. Voltage/Continuity Test: With the sensor disconnected and the key ON, check the harness side for the proper reference voltage (typically 5V) and ensure the ground circuit is intact. Test the signal wire for continuity to ground; if it has continuity to ground while disconnected from the ECU, the harness is shorted.

  4. Sensor Resistance Test: Measure the resistance across the sensor's pins. A reading of 0 ohms (or near zero) indicates the sensor is internally shorted and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Cool Down

    Ensure the machine has been turned off and the exhaust system has completely cooled. DPF components operate at extremely high temperatures (often exceeding 1200°F / 650°C during regeneration).

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Exhaust Gas Temperature Sensor positioned immediately after the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) canister.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the sensor's electrical connector from the main engine wiring harness.

  4. Removal

    Using a suitable wrench or specialized sensor socket, carefully unscrew the sensor from the exhaust pipe. Note: Exhaust sensors frequently seize. Applying a high-quality penetrating oil and allowing it to soak may prevent stripping the exhaust bung threads.

  5. Preparation

    Apply a small amount of high-temperature anti-seize compound to the threads of the new sensor (if it does not come pre-coated from the factory). Do not get anti-seize on the sensor probe itself.

  6. Installation

    Thread the new sensor into the exhaust bung by hand to prevent cross-threading, then tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

  7. Reconnect

    Plug the electrical connector back into the harness, ensuring it clicks securely into place. Route the wire away from direct heat sources.

  8. Clear Codes

    Use a diagnostic scan tool or DTC eraser to clear the ENG 1802 fault code from the Engine ECU. Run the machine to verify the code does not return.
