New Holland ENG 1803 – ISM-IDI ENGINE: Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) OUT Temperature sensor: Out of Voltage - High.

Issue description

The engine control system is receiving a voltage signal from the DPF OUT temperature sensor that exceeds the normal operating range. In automotive and agricultural electrical systems, an "Out of Voltage - High" condition typically indicates an open circuit (such as a disconnected sensor, broken wire, or failed internal thermistor) or a short to a power source.

Check the cause

  1. Check the DPF OUT temperature sensor (located downstream of the Diesel Particulate Filter) to ensure it is securely plugged in

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the sensor and the Engine ECU for chafing, melted insulation from exhaust heat, or broken wires that would cause an open circuit

  3. Disconnect the sensor and inspect the connector pins for corrosion, moisture, or damage

  4. Test the sensor's resistance with a multimeter to see if the internal element has failed open

  5. Check the harness side with the key ON to verify the ECU is sending the proper reference voltage

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the machine, disconnect the battery, and allow the exhaust system to cool completely to prevent severe burns.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Find the DPF OUT temperature sensor on the exhaust pipe, positioned immediately after the Diesel Particulate Filter assembly.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor harness.

  4. Remove

    Using an appropriately sized wrench or sensor socket, carefully unscrew the faulty temperature sensor from the exhaust bung. (Note: Penetrating oil may be required if the sensor is seized from exhaust heat).

  5. Install

    Thread the new exhaust gas temperature sensor into the exhaust pipe and tighten it securely.

  6. Reconnect

    Plug the sensor's electrical connector back into the machine's wiring harness.

  7. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 1803 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the code does not return and that the ECU is reading a normal temperature value.
