New Holland ENG 1808 – ENGINE ECU: Burner Glow Voltage: Out of Voltage - High

Issue description

The engine control system has detected that the voltage on the aftertreatment burner glow plug circuit is higher than the expected normal range, typically indicating an open circuit, a disconnected plug, or a short to power in the wiring harness.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the burner glow plug on top of the DPF/DOC burner assembly. Check the wiring harness and connector for signs of melting, corrosion, or a disconnected wire.

  2. Perform a multimeter resistance test on the disconnected glow plug. A healthy plug reads approximately 0.6 to 2 ohms. Infinite or extremely high resistance indicates a broken or burnt-out internal element.

  3. Perform a circuit voltage test with the key in the ON position. Test the harness side of the connector to ensure the controller is sending proper voltage and there is no short to power in the wiring.

Repair steps

  1. Safety First

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shocks or accidental system activation. Ensure the exhaust and DPF system have completely cooled, as these components reach extremely high temperatures.

  2. Access the Burner

    Locate the DPF/DOC assembly on the engine and identify the burner glow plug connected to the top of the burner.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

    Carefully unplug the electrical connector from the glow plug.

  4. Apply Penetrating Oil

    Apply penetrating oil to the threads and let it soak to lubricate the threads, as glow plugs can easily snap during removal due to extreme heat and carbon buildup.

  5. Remove the Glow Plug

    Using a torque wrench (to ensure you do not exceed the plug's shear value), carefully unscrew the faulty glow plug from the burner assembly.

  6. Install the New Plug

    Thread the new aftertreatment burner glow plug into the housing. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (typically around 7 to 10 Nm for an M8-sized plug).

  7. Reconnect

    Reattach the electrical connector to the new glow plug and reconnect the machine's battery.

  8. Clear Codes and Test

    Use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 1808 fault code. Start the engine and, if necessary, initiate a forced DPF regeneration to verify that the burner ignites properly and the code does not return.
