New Holland ENG 1809 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Aftertreatment Burner Glow Voltage Out Of Range High

Issue description

Voltage on the burner glow plug circuit is higher than the expected maximum threshold, which typically points to a short to power in the wiring harness, a failed glow plug relay stuck in the closed position, or an internal short within the glow plug itself.

Check the cause

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and allow the DPF and exhaust system to cool completely before inspecting.

  2. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the Engine ECU to the DPF burner glow plug for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinched lines that could cause a short to a 12V power source.

  3. Locate and test the Burner Glow Relay in the fuse/relay box to ensure the internal contacts are not fused or stuck closed.

  4. Disconnect the electrical connector at the burner glow plug and use a multimeter to measure the resistance of the glow plug to check for an internal short.

  5. Turn the key to the ON position (engine off) and probe the glow plug supply wire to see if voltage is present when it should not be.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

    Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent any electrical spikes or accidental shorts during the repair.

  2. Access the DPF Burner

    Open the engine compartment and locate the DOC/DPF assembly and the attached burner unit.

  3. Replace the Relay (If Faulty)

    If the diagnostic tests pointed to a stuck relay, remove the old Burner Glow Relay from the distribution box and install a new 12V 35A micro relay.

  4. Replace the Burner Glow Plug (If Faulty)

    Disconnect the electrical connector from the burner glow plug. Carefully unthread the faulty glow plug from the burner chamber. Install the new OEM burner glow plug and torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Reconnect the electrical connector (replace the terminal connector if it shows signs of melting or heat damage).

  5. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If a short to power was found in the harness, splice and heat-shrink the damaged wire, or replace the affected harness section.

  6. Reassembly and Clearing Codes

    Reconnect the negative battery cable. Use a diagnostic service tool to clear the ENG 1809 fault code.

  7. Verification

    Start the engine and monitor the system. You may need to initiate a forced DPF regeneration using the service tool to ensure the burner ignites properly and the ECU reads the correct voltage.
