New Holland ENG 1816 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Capacitor Charge-up Circuit Malfunction (insufficient charge)
Issue description
The internal capacitor circuit within the engine controller, which stores the high voltage required to fire the electronic fuel injectors, is failing to reach or maintain its required electrical charge.

Check the cause
Check system voltage to verify that battery and alternator output is not dropping too low (e.g., below 8V), which prevents the capacitor from charging.
Inspect the fuel injector wiring harness for open circuits, chafing, or shorts to ground/power. A shorted injector circuit can drain the capacitor.
Check the main power and ground connections to the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to ensure the module is receiving adequate and stable power.
Repair steps
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Engine Control Unit (ECU) and carefully disconnect the main wiring harness connectors.
Unbolt and remove the faulty ECU from its mounting bracket.
Install the new or remanufactured ECU and secure it to the bracket.
Reconnect the wiring harness connectors and the negative battery cable.
Using the official New Holland service tool, restore the self-learning parameters and write the correct injector codes (calibration codes) to the new ECU for each cylinder.
Critical Step
Clear all fault codes and test run the machine to verify the repair.
