New Holland ENG 1818 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): CPU fault - Watchdog IC fault
Issue description
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) contains an internal "watchdog" integrated circuit (IC) that continuously monitors the main processor's operation. If the main processor locks up, fails to execute its programming correctly, or experiences an internal hardware/software failure, the watchdog IC detects the lack of response and triggers this fault code. It triggers a Red master warning lamp.

Check the cause
Verify Active Faults: Use the Electronic Service Tool (EST) to verify if the fault is currently active. Check for accompanying power-related codes (e.g., 1900 UCM Ground Fault, 1901 UCM Supply Voltage High, 1902 UCM Supply Voltage Low).
Inspect Wiring & Connectors: Inspect the main wiring harness and connectors leading to the ECU. Verify that the harness is free of damage, corrosion, abrasion, and incorrect attachment.
Check Power and Ground: Verify that the ECU is receiving proper operating voltage and has a clean ground.
Conclusion: If the wiring harness tests good, power/ground are within specification, and the 1818 fault code remains active, the ECU has suffered an internal hardware failure and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the battery before servicing the ECU to prevent electrical spikes.
Remove the ECU
Locate the Engine Control Unit, disconnect the main harness connectors, and unbolt the module from its mounting bracket.
Install the New ECU
Mount the replacement ECU and securely reconnect the wiring harnesses.
Reconnect Power
Reconnect the battery.
Program the ECU
Connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) to the machine.
Restore Parameters
You must load the diagnostic software and follow the prompts to reset the ECU data. This includes writing the correct injector codes to the new ECU and resetting the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) data.
