New Holland ENG 1819 – Engine Control Unit (ECU): Speed Sensor: Both sensors out of range (upper side)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is receiving an invalid, excessively high voltage, or out-of-bounds signal from both of the engine's speed sensors (Sensor 1 and Sensor 2), typically resulting in a crank-no-start condition or an immediate engine shutdown.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the speed sensors on the engine block/flywheel housing for chafed wires, corrosion, or loose pins.

  2. Resistance Test: Disconnect the sensor and use a multimeter to test the internal resistance of the speed sensor. The resistance should measure between 109.5 - 143.5 ohms at 20 degrees C (68.0 degrees F).

  3. Air Gap Check: Use a dial indicator or feeler gauge to check the sensor air gap between the sensor tip and the trigger wheel. The gap should be approximately 0.7 - 1.7 mm (0.0276 - 0.0669 in).

  4. Voltage Check: Verify that the ECU is supplying the correct 5V reference and ground to the sensor circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Locate the Sensors

    On the ISM-IDI engine, the speed sensors are located on the flywheel housing (sensing engine speed as an engine pulse) and/or on the side of the engine block.

  3. Removal

    Disconnect the electrical pigtail connector from the faulty speed sensor.

  4. Remove retaining bolt

    Remove the single retaining bolt holding the sensor in place.

  5. Remove sensor

    Carefully pull the sensor straight out of the housing.

  6. Installation

    Clean the mounting surface to ensure the new sensor sits flush.

  7. Insert new sensor

    Insert the new speed sensor into the housing and install the retaining bolt.

  8. Verify Air Gap

    Before fully tightening, ensure the air gap is within the specified 0.7 - 1.7 mm range. Torque the bolt to OEM specifications.

  9. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector.

  10. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic service tool (or CAN-bus DTC eraser) to clear the ENG 1819 code from the ECU memory. Start the engine to verify the repair.
