New Holland ENG 1820 – ENGINE Controller (Engine ECU): Speed Sensor: Sensor 1 Out of Range (upper side).
Issue description
This code indicates that the engine control unit is receiving a signal from Engine Speed Sensor 1 (typically the primary crankshaft or camshaft position sensor) that is outside the expected upper threshold or is implausible. This often points to a sensor that is failing, reading erratically, or suffering from a wiring short/interference that causes the RPM signal to spike artificially high.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- L220 Skid Steer Loaders
- SR175 Skid Steers
- B90B/B100B Backhoes
- T9 Series 4WD Tractors (T9.390, T9.450, T9.505, T9.600, T9.670)
- T9000 Series
- TJ Series (TJ275 through TJ530)
- Steiger 4WD Tractors (335 through 535)
- Puma
- Maxxum series
Check the cause
Check the wiring harness for Sensor 1 for open circuits, short circuits to power/ground, or chafing, and inspect the connector for moisture or corrosion.
Use a diagnostic tool to monitor live data and compare RPM readings of Sensor 1 and Sensor 2; erratic spikes on Sensor 1 isolate it as the fault.
Remove the sensor and inspect the magnetic tip for metal shavings or debris that could distort the signal.
Verify that the sensor is seated correctly and that the tone ring or flywheel teeth are not damaged.
Repair steps
Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate Engine Speed Sensor 1 (typically mounted on the flywheel housing or near the engine timing cover).
Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the sensor.
Remove the retaining bolt securing the sensor to the housing.
Carefully pull the sensor out of its mounting bore.
Clean the mounting surface thoroughly.
Any dirt left behind can alter the sensor gap and cause future reading errors.
Insert the new engine speed sensor and install the retaining bolt.
Reconnect the electrical harness connector.
Reconnect the battery, turn the ignition on, and use a diagnostic tool to clear the ENG 1820 fault code.
Start the engine and verify that the RPM signal is stable and the code does not return.
