New Holland ENG 1822 – ENGINE (ISM-IDI ENGINE): Speed Sensor: Sensor 1 Out of Range (upper side)
Issue description
The engine control module is receiving a signal from Engine Speed Sensor 1 that exceeds the maximum expected threshold (out of range high). This usually points to a short to voltage in the sensor wiring, a failing internal sensor component, or an incorrect air gap/alignment between the sensor and the flywheel tone ring.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness leading to Speed Sensor 1 for chafed wires, melted insulation, or a short to a power source.
Check the sensor connector for water intrusion, corrosion, or bent pins.
Ensure the sensor is securely bolted to the engine block or flywheel housing, as a loose sensor can vibrate and cause erratic spikes.
Inspect the flywheel teeth or crankshaft tone ring for packed dirt, metal shavings, or physical damage that could distort the electromagnetic signal.
Use a multimeter to check the sensor's supply voltage, ground circuit, and signal wire continuity back to the Engine ECU.
Repair steps
Safety First
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable.
Locate the Sensor
Locate Engine Speed Sensor 1. It is typically mounted directly on the engine flywheel housing or near the main crankshaft pulley assembly.
Disconnect
Depress the locking tab on the multi-pin sealed electrical connector and unplug it from the sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the sensor in place. Carefully twist and pull the sensor out of its bore.
Clean the Port
Wipe the mounting port clean of any oil, dirt, or debris to ensure the new sensor seats perfectly flat (which is critical for the correct magnetic air gap).
Install the New Sensor
Insert the new speed sensor into the bore. If the sensor utilizes an O-ring, lubricate it lightly with clean engine oil before insertion.
Secure and Reconnect
Install the retaining bolt and tighten it to the OEM torque specification. Reconnect the electrical harness until it clicks into place.
Clear Codes
Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic scan tool to clear the ENG 1822 fault code. Start the engine and verify that the RPM reads smoothly without hesitation or returning fault codes.
