ENG 1823

New Holland ENG 1823 – ENGINE ECU: Speed Sensor: Sensor 2 Out of Range (upper side)

Issue description

The Engine Control Unit has detected a signal voltage from the camshaft speed sensor that is higher than the expected operational range, or the signal is otherwise invalid/lost.

Check the cause

  1. Check the camshaft speed sensor's electrical connector and the engine interface wiring harness for corrosion, bent pins, or a short circuit to power (which causes the 'upper side' / high voltage reading).

  2. Using a multimeter, test the internal resistance of the sensor. Expected resistance is 109.5 - 143.5 Ω at 20 °C / 68.0 °F. If it reads open or out of this range, the sensor has failed internally.

  3. Use a dial indicator to check the sensor air gap against the timing gear. Depending on the specific engine, the gap should typically be between 0.7 mm and 1.7 mm (0.0276 - 0.0669 in).

  4. Ensure the sensor is not physically damaged and that the phase slots/signal wheel on the camshaft timing gear are intact.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts or accidental engine cranking.

  2. Locate the Sensor

    Locate the Camshaft Speed Sensor (Sensor 2). It is typically mounted on the timing gear housing or the cylinder head, depending on whether it is an ISM or NEF engine.

  3. Disconnect

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  4. Remove

    Remove the mounting fastener (usually an M6 bolt) and carefully pull the old sensor out of its bore.

  5. Install

    Apply a thin coat of clean engine oil to the O-ring of the new sensor. Insert the new sensor into the housing.

  6. Torque

    Install the mounting bolt and tighten it to the OEM specification (typically 8 Nm / 71 lb-in for the M6 fastener).

  7. Reconnect

    Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.

  8. Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use an Electronic Service Tool (EST) to clear the ENG 1823 fault code from the Engine ECU, or cycle the key to see if the code self-clears upon detecting a valid signal.
