ENG 1824

New Holland ENG 1824 – Engine ECU (ISM-IDI ENGINE or EDC7): Regeneration needed: Highest level - Soot Load Level is between 100% < 140%

Issue description

This code indicates that the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) has accumulated a critically high amount of soot. The soot load has exceeded the normal threshold for passive or standard active regeneration (100%) but has not yet reached the absolute critical shutdown limit (which is >140%, triggering code 3992: Burner Shut Down Mode). Immediate intervention is required to prevent engine derate or permanent DPF damage.

Check the cause

  1. Check for accompanying DPF sensor codes (e.g., 3171, 3838, 3839, or 3428) that could cause a false soot load reading

  2. Verify the integrity of the DPF differential pressure sensor (Delta-P sensor) and its tubes. Inspect for melted, soot-clogged, or cracked tubes

  3. Check the soot level status to verify if it has crossed the 140% threshold (Code 3992), which would lock out standard regeneration

Repair steps

  1. Parked Regeneration

Move the machine to a safe, well-ventilated area away from combustible materials, as the soot load is at the 'Highest level' (100% - 140%) and will likely not regenerate passively during operation.

  2. Initiate Manual Regen

Follow the operator's manual procedure to initiate a parked/manual regeneration via the cab switches. The engine will elevate its RPMs and inject fuel to burn off the accumulated soot.

  3. Service Regeneration (If Locked Out)

If the soot load is too high for the cab switch to work, connect the New Holland Electronic Service Tool (EST) diagnostic software to force a 'Service Regeneration'.

  4. Physical Cleaning or Replacement

If the EST tool cannot force a regeneration, or if the DPF is physically face-plugged/damaged, remove the DPF from the exhaust stream. Send it to a professional DPF cleaning facility to be baked and blown out, or replace it entirely.

  5. Reset ECU

Once the DPF is cleaned or replaced, use the EST tool to reset the DPF soot load values in the Engine ECU so the system knows a clean filter has been installed.
