New Holland ENG 211 – Engine Controller (ENG): Communications problem with Armrest, Instrumentation, or Transmission Controllers
Issue description
The Engine Controller has experienced a temporary or permanent loss of CAN bus communication with one or more of these secondary control modules.
Applies to these machines
6 machines- TJ275
- TJ325
- TJ450
- TJ500
- TG255
- T8040
Check the cause
Inspect for Moisture and Corrosion: Perform a housing and connector inspection, especially if the tractor operates in highly humid climates.
Check CAN Bus Terminators: On older models (like the TG255), inspect the active terminators located behind the back cab cover and in the engine bay for broken solder joints where the pins meet the circuit board.
Inspect the Armrest Processor Module for Physical Damage: Check if self-tapping screws used to reattach a loose armrest cover have pierced and destroyed the module housed directly underneath.
Check for Accompanying Codes: Look for related communication codes such as INST 12011 (Communication lost with armrest) or TRANS 135, which help isolate the break in the CAN bus.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical shorts during the repair.
Clean Connections
Unhook and clean the wiring harness connections at the transmission, instrumentation cluster, and armrest controller using an electronic contact cleaner.
Replace Faulty Terminators
Inspect the CAN bus terminators. If the tractor still has the older, failure-prone active terminators with cracked solder joints, remove them. Replace them with the updated, passive terminator plugs (which utilize two standard resistors to terminate the bus).
Access the Armrest Module
Carefully remove the armrest cover to access the Armrest Processor Module. Inspect the board for physical damage, burnt components, or screw punctures.
Replace the Module
If the Armrest Processor Module is damaged, unbolt it and disconnect the wiring harnesses. Install the replacement module.
Flash Software
Connect the OEM Service Tool to the tractor to download and flash the correct operating software to the module.
Reassemble and Test
Reinstall the armrest cover using only the correct OEM-length hardware. Reconnect the battery, clear the stored fault codes, and test the tractor's transmission and armrest functions to verify communication is restored.
