ENG 213

New Holland ENG 213 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Oil Temperature Sensor Voltage is too low

Issue description

The signal voltage returning from the oil temperature sensor has dropped below the minimum acceptable threshold expected by the controller, indicating a short to ground either within the wiring harness or internally inside the sensor itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the oil temperature sensor, its connector, and the wiring harness leading back to the Engine ECU for chafed wire insulation, pinched wires against the engine block, or melted conduits.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the sensor and check for oil intrusion, water, or corrosion inside the pins.

  3. Sensor vs. Wiring Isolation Test: With the machine key ON (engine off), disconnect the oil temperature sensor. If the code changes to ENG 212, the sensor is internally shorted. If it remains ENG 213, the short to ground is in the wiring harness.

  4. Voltage Test: Using a multimeter, verify that the sensor connector is receiving the proper 5V reference signal and has a good ground.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect the battery

    If the wiring is at fault, begin by disconnecting the battery.

  2. Trace the sensor signal wire

    Trace the sensor signal wire back to the Engine ECU.

  3. Locate the short

    Locate the chafed or shorted section of the wire.

  4. Repair the wire

    Repair the wire using OEM-approved heat-shrink butt connectors or replace the affected harness section.

  5. Secure the harness

    Secure the harness with zip ties away from hot or vibrating engine components.

  6. Cool the engine

    If the sensor is at fault, turn off the machine and allow the engine/oil to cool.

  7. Clean the area

    Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the oil port.

  8. Place a catch pan

    Place a catch pan beneath the sensor location, as a small amount of oil may leak out during removal.

  9. Remove the faulty sensor

    Unplug the electrical connector and use a wrench to unthread the faulty oil temperature sensor.

  10. Install the new sensor

    Thread the new sensor into the port. Torque to OEM specifications.

  11. Reconnect the harness

    Reconnect the electrical harness.

  12. Top off oil and clear codes

    Top off any lost oil, turn the key ON, and clear the inactive fault codes from the dashboard or via a diagnostic service tool.

  13. Verify the repair

    Start the engine and verify the code does not return.
