Issue description
The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the oil temperature sensor that exceeds the maximum programmed threshold. In thermistor-style temperature sensors, high voltage typically indicates an open circuit (such as a broken wire or disconnected plug), a short to a power source, or a completely failed sensor with infinite internal resistance.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the oil temperature sensor housing for physical damage and check the electrical connector for corrosion, pushed-out pins, or water intrusion.
Perform a harness check for an open circuit: disconnect the sensor, turn the ignition ON (engine off), and verify a 5V reference voltage at the connector and good continuity to chassis ground.
Test the signal wire between the sensor connector and the Engine ECU for a short to voltage, ensuring it is not chafed and shorting against another power wire.
Measure the resistance (Ohms) across the two terminals of the sensor itself and compare to OEM nominal values for the current ambient temperature. An 'OL' (open loop) reading indicates internal failure.
Repair steps
Prep the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the oil temperature sensor on the engine block (or transmission housing, depending on the specific model's shared sensor routing).
Prepare for Spills
Place a clean catch pan directly beneath the sensor to catch any oil that escapes during removal.
Remove the Sensor
Unplug the wiring harness connector. Use a deep socket or wrench to carefully unscrew the faulty sensor from the port.
Install the New Sensor
Thread the new OEM sensor into the port by hand to avoid cross-threading. Tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque (do not over-tighten, as brass sensors can snap).
Reconnect
Plug the electrical harness back into the sensor until the locking tab clicks. Reconnect the battery.
Test
Start the engine and check the sensor port for oil leaks. Use a diagnostic scan tool or the machine's onboard diagnostic display to clear the ENG 214 fault code. Verify that the code does not return once the engine reaches operating temperature.
