Issue description
An OEM-installed switch or sensor (wired to Auxiliary Input 3) has detected a critical condition and triggered the engine protection system. When this code is active, the engine will typically experience a speed derate or a complete engine shutdown to prevent imminent damage.

Check the cause
Consult the specific machine's wiring schematic to determine exactly which sensor or switch is wired to Auxiliary Equipment Sensor Input # 3 (often a coolant level sensor, hydraulic temperature switch, or implement safety switch)
Verify if the critical condition actually exists (e.g., physically check the radiator/overflow tank if the switch monitors coolant level)
Check for related electrical faults on the same circuit using a diagnostic tool (such as SPN 703 FMI 3 or SPN 703 FMI 4) to determine if the issue is a wiring short rather than a legitimate critical condition
Inspect the wiring harness between the identified OEM switch and the Engine ECM for chafing, corrosion, or disconnected pins
Repair steps
Resolve the Underlying Condition
If the sensor is accurately reporting a critical issue (e.g., low fluid), correct the mechanical issue by topping off the fluid or clearing the blockage.
Test the Sensor/Switch
If the physical condition is normal but the code remains active, disconnect the sensor and test it for proper continuity/resistance according to the service manual.
Repair the Wiring
If the sensor tests good, trace the circuit back to the ECM. Repair any open circuits, shorts to ground, or shorts to voltage in the OEM harness.
