New Holland ENG 2249 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU): Injector Metering Rail 1 Fuel Pressure lower than commanded pressure.
Issue description
The engine control system is detecting that the actual fuel pressure inside the high-pressure common rail is dropping below the target pressure requested by the engine mapping. This is typically caused by a fuel supply restriction, a leak in the high-pressure system, a failing pressure relief valve, or a faulty sensor.

Check the cause
Verify that the machine has adequate, uncontaminated fuel. Check the low-pressure fuel system for restrictions, and inspect the fuel filters and water separator for clogs or water.
Test the electric lift pump (low-pressure supply). Ensure it is receiving proper voltage and delivering adequate supply pressure to the high-pressure pump.
Check the mechanical pressure relief valve (PRV) on the fuel rail. If the valve is weak, it will 'pop off' too early or leak fuel back into the return line, preventing the rail from building commanded pressure.
Inspect the wiring harness and connector to the fuel rail pressure sensor for corrosion, shorts, or open circuits. Verify the sensor's voltage output against the service manual specifications.
Perform an injector return flow (leak-off) test. Excessive return flow from one or more injectors, or a failing high-pressure pump metering unit, will cause a loss of rail pressure.
Repair steps
Resolve Low-Pressure Issues
If the diagnostic checks reveal a restriction, replace the primary and secondary fuel filters. If the electric lift pump is failing to provide adequate feed pressure, replace the lift pump.
Replace the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV)
If the PRV is found to be leaking during the return flow test, depressurize the fuel system, remove the faulty PRV from the common rail, and install a new one. Note: Extreme cleanliness is required when opening the high-pressure fuel system to prevent microscopic contamination.
Replace the Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor
If the sensor is outputting erratic or out-of-range data, depressurize the system, unthread the old sensor from the rail, install the new sensor, and torque to OEM specifications.
Address High-Pressure Failures
If the filters, lift pump, PRV, and sensor are all functioning correctly, replace the leaking fuel injector(s) or the high-pressure fuel pump assembly based on the results of the leak-off test.
Clear Codes and Prime
After replacing any fuel system components, prime the fuel system using fresh, filtered fuel to remove all air. Clear the ENG 2249 fault code using a diagnostic tool and test run the machine under load to verify the repair.
