New Holland ENG 2266 – Engine Controller (ENG / EDC): Electric Lift Pump for Engine Fuel Supply Voltage too low

Issue description

The voltage reaching the electric fuel lift pump (which supplies low-pressure fuel to the main injection pump) has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold. This can result in fuel starvation, hard starting, or the engine derating under load.

Check the cause

  1. Verify overall battery health and system voltage, as low system voltage or poor chassis grounds can trigger false low-voltage codes.

  2. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the electric lift pump for crushed wiring looms, stretched wires, moisture in the connectors, or corrosion at the pins.

  3. Disconnect the lift pump and use a multimeter to check the supply voltage at the connector with the key ON (should be approximately 12V).

  4. Inspect the power distribution box for blown fuses or failing relays that supply power to the engine control circuits and lift pump.

  5. Inspect fuel filters, as a severely clogged filter can cause the lift pump to work harder, drawing excess current and causing a voltage drop.

Repair steps

  1. Record and Clear

    Write down the code and the conditions under which it occurred (e.g., under heavy load, cold start). Clear the code to see if it is an active or stored/historic fault.

  2. Resolve Wiring Faults

    If the voltage at the pump connector is low, trace the wiring back to the Engine ECU and power distribution center. Repair any chafed wires, clean corroded ground terminals, and replace damaged connectors.

  3. Replace the Lift Pump

    If the supply voltage to the connector is correct but the code persists (or the pump is internally shorted/failing and pulling the voltage down), the electric lift pump must be replaced. Disconnect the negative battery cable, relieve fuel system pressure, place a catch pan under the pump assembly, disconnect the electrical harness and fuel lines, unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket, and install the new pump.

  4. Replace Fuel Filters

    Always replace the primary and secondary fuel filters when replacing a lift pump to ensure no restrictions damage the new pump.

  5. Bleed the System

    Prime the fuel system to remove air before attempting to start the engine.

  6. Test

    Reconnect the battery, start the engine, and monitor live data to ensure the fuel supply voltage and pressure are within normal parameters.
