ENG 2311

New Holland ENG 2311 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Electronic Fuel Injection Control Valve open or closed Circuit

Issue description

The ECM detects that the fuel pump actuator circuit resistance is too high, too low, or has an intermittent connection (open or short circuit). High circuit resistance can cause fuel pressure to be higher than commanded at light loads.

Applies to these machines

  • T8000 series
  • T8030
  • T8040
  • TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect all connectors at the ECM and the fuel pump actuator to ensure they are clean, tight, and free of corrosion.

  2. Perform a harness resistance test to check for high resistance, shorts, or open circuits between the ECM and the fuel pump actuator (pins #30 and #40 on some Cummins ECMs).

  3. Measure the internal resistance of the fuel pump pressurizing assembly 1 (fuel pump actuator) to determine if it has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Turn off the key switch and disconnect the batteries (negative cable first) before performing service on the fuel system or ECM wiring.

  2. Locate the Component

Locate the fuel pump pressurizing assembly 1 valve (fuel pump actuator), which is mounted directly on the engine-mounted fuel pump housing.

  3. Wiring Repair

If the diagnostic checks revealed high resistance or corroded pins in the engine harness, repair or replace the affected connector/wiring harness.

  4. Actuator Replacement

If the wiring is sound but the actuator failed the internal resistance test, remove the mounting hardware securing the fuel pump actuator to the fuel pump housing and install a new actuator.

  5. Reassembly

Reconnect the electrical connector to the actuator and reconnect the battery cables.

  6. Validation

Clear the fault codes using a diagnostic tool (such as Cummins INSITE or New Holland EST) and test run the engine. Verify that the fuel rail pressure matches the commanded pressure and that the code does not return.
