New Holland ENG 2321 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Crankshaft Speed / Position data invalid
Issue description
The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an intermittent, degraded, or missing signal from the crankshaft speed/position sensor over an extended period of engine operation. This disrupts fuel injection timing, which can lead to hard starts, misfires, poor fuel economy, or a complete loss of engine power.

Check the cause
Visual Inspection of Wiring and Connector: Inspect the sensor's electrical connector and wiring harness. Look for physical damage to the sensor's connector (e.g., a broken fan belt striking and shattering the sensor jack).
Check Sensor Gap: Ensure the gap between the sensor tip and the flywheel teeth/metering wheel is within specification (minimum distance to the metering wheel of 0.5mm).
Check for Debris: Remove the sensor and check the magnetic tip for a buildup of metallic shavings or debris, which can distort the magnetic signal.
Voltage Check: Verify that the ECM is providing a 5-volt supply to the position sensor and that the return circuit is intact.
Repair steps
Power Down
Turn off the ignition and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the crankshaft speed sensor, which is typically mounted on the side of the engine block near the flywheel housing or crankshaft gear.
Disconnect
Unplug the electrical wiring harness connector from the sensor.
Remove the Sensor
Remove the mounting bolt securing the sensor to the engine block and carefully pull the sensor out.
Clean the Port
Thoroughly clean the mounting surface and the sensor port on the engine block. The new sensor must sit perfectly flush to maintain the highly sensitive 0.5mm–2.0mm gap between the sensor tip and the internal gear teeth.
Install the New Sensor
Insert the new crankshaft speed sensor and tighten the retaining bolt to the manufacturer's torque specification.
Reconnect
Plug the electrical connector back into the sensor until it clicks securely.
Validate the Repair
Reconnect the battery. Start the engine and let it idle for at least 1 minute. This idle time allows the ECM to validate the repair, at which point the active fault code status will change to inactive. Clear the inactive code using an electronic service tool.
