ENG 237

New Holland ENG 237 – Engine Control Module (ECM / Engine ECU): External Speed Multi Unit Sync Command Input Data Incorrect

Issue description

This code triggers when the throttle input signal to the primary or secondary engine for multiple unit synchronization is less than 3 percent or more than 97 percent, or if communication between multiple engines/modules becomes intermittent. The fault indicates a breakdown in this J1939 communication or an incorrect configuration jumper.

Applies to these machines

Check the cause

  1. Check Engine Configuration: Verify the jumper wires that configure the engine as a primary (master) or secondary (slave) unit. Incorrect master/slave connectors will cause this fault.

  2. Inspect the J1939 Datalink Harness: Check the wiring harness from the ECM to the synchronization module for signs of corrosion, wear, damage, or pinching.

  3. Check Terminating Resistors: Disconnect the datalink connectors and measure the resistance to ensure the J1939 terminating resistors are intact and within specification.

  4. Examine Connectors: Inspect the ECM and OEM harness connector pins for pushed-back pins, moisture, or short circuits (open or short to ground/voltage).

Repair steps

  1. Pre-inspect the Harness

Carefully inspect the engine harness to ensure the correct master and slave connectors are plugged in. Correcting a misconfiguration here can prevent you from having to recalibrate the ECM.

  2. Disconnect and Isolate

Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position. Disconnect the J1939 datalink harness from the ECM and the secondary CAN bus.

  3. Repair Wiring/Connectors

If the diagnostic checks revealed out-of-spec resistance, shorts, or damaged pins, repair or replace the affected section of the J1939 datalink harness or the secondary CAN jumper.

  4. Reconnect Components

Fully seat all connectors and ensure jumper wires configuring the engine as primary/secondary are securely attached.

  5. Clear the Fault Code

Turn the keyswitch "ON". Use an electronic service tool (such as the New Holland EST or Cummins INSITE) to clear the inactive fault codes.

  6. Verify Repair

Cycle the key and operate the machine to verify that Fault Code 237 does not return to an active state.

Parts you might need

(4)
  • Secondary CAN Bus Wire Harness

    87550664
  • Secondary CAN Jumper Plug

    87555066

Attaches to Secondary CAN Bus Harness

  • Main Cab Wire Harness

    87365700

Replaces 87664624, 87338331; if datalink failure is traced to the cab routing

  • Engine Control Module (ECM)

Only replace if the ECM has suffered a critical internal failure and fails to broadcast entirely, which is rare for this specific code
