ENG 241

New Holland ENG 241 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / ECM): Vehicle Speed Signal lost

Issue description

The control module has unexpectedly lost the input signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The sensor monitors the rotational speed of the transmission or driveline to determine the machine's ground speed, and the loss of this signal prevents the system from reading how fast the vehicle is moving.

Applies to these machines

  • T-Series (T6, T7, TM)
  • TG Series
  • TL Series
  • TS Series

Check the cause

  1. Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor (typically mounted on the transmission housing or transfer case).

  2. Disconnect the vehicle harness from the sensor.

  3. Inspect the harness and the sensor connector pins for bent, broken, pushed back, or expanded pins, corroded pins or moisture in/on the connector, and missing or damaged weather seals.

  4. Check the wiring of the associated pins and cables for a short circuit to the battery, a short circuit to ground, or an open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Ensure the machine is turned off and parked safely.

  2. If the diagnostic checks reveal damaged pins or wiring, repair or replace the damaged connector/harness pins first.

  3. If the wiring and connector are in good condition but the sensor is faulty, remove the retaining bolt(s) holding the Vehicle Speed Sensor to the transmission housing.

  4. Remove the old sensor and install the new Vehicle Speed Sensor.

  5. Reconnect the vehicle wiring harness to the sensor, ensuring it clicks into place and the seal is tight.

  6. Turn the key switch to the "ON" position.

  7. Use a diagnostic scan tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the inactive fault codes.

  8. Test drive the tractor to verify that the speedometer registers correctly and the ENG 241 code does not return.
