New Holland ENG 242 – Engine Controller (ECM / ENG): Vehicle Speed Signal intermittent / tampering

The control module is receiving an erratic, dropping, or implausible signal from the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS). The system flags this as "tampering" because an intermittent or missing speed signal while the engine is under load or in gear often mimics attempts to bypass vehicle speed limiters or safety governors.

   Inspect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) on the transmission housing, checking the wiring harness and connector for corrosion, loose pins, or physical damage.

   Test the VSS circuit for continuity, checking for an open circuit, a short to ground, or a short to positive power.

   Determine if the sensor is a magnetic pick-up or a digital input (mini-gen) VSS, and verify the signal output frequency of the sensor to ensure it is not exceeding maximum limits or dropping out during operation.

   Ensure there is no internal transmission damage or debris on the sensor's magnetic pickup that could be interrupting the reading.

   Power Down

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the Vehicle Speed Sensor, which is typically threaded or bolted into the side of the transmission housing.

   Wiring Repair

   If the diagnostic tests revealed a wiring fault, repair the damaged section of the vehicle speed sensor circuit.

   Sensor Replacement

   If the circuit is good but the sensor failed testing, disconnect the wiring harness from the VSS. Remove the retaining bolt or unthread the sensor from the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Install the new OEM speed sensor. Reconnect the wiring harness securely.

   Clear Codes

   Reconnect the battery. Use a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault codes from the Engine Controller.

   Test

   Operate the machine to confirm the speedometer works smoothly and the ENG 242 code does not return.
