ENG 245

New Holland ENG 245 – Engine Controller (ENG / EDC7): Fan Clutch Voltage too low

Issue description

This fault code indicates that the engine controller is detecting a lower-than-expected voltage on the circuit responsible for operating the electronically-controlled viscous fan clutch. This condition typically points to an open circuit, a short to ground in the wiring harness, a disconnected plug, or an internal failure (such as a burnt-out solenoid coil) within the fan clutch assembly itself.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading from the Engine ECU to the fan clutch for chafed wires, breaks, or areas shorting against the engine block or chassis.

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector at the fan clutch and inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or bent terminals that could cause an open circuit or high resistance.

  3. With the key in the ON position, use a multimeter to verify that the Engine ECU is sending the correct supply voltage to the fan clutch connector.

  4. Measure the resistance (ohms) across the terminals of the fan clutch itself to check for an internal open circuit or a dead short.

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

Disconnect the negative battery terminal to prevent accidental electrical shorts.

  2. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the fan clutch.

  3. Remove fan shroud

Remove the fan shroud mounting bolts and push the shroud back over the engine to gain clearance.

  4. Unbolt fan blade

Unbolt the fan blade assembly from the fan clutch.

  5. Remove fan clutch

Remove the fan clutch from the water pump or engine mounting hub. (Note: Pay close attention to the thread direction. Many New Holland fan clutches, such as part 82000845, utilize an M30 Left-Hand (LH) thread and must be turned clockwise to loosen).

  6. Install new clutch

Install the new viscous fan clutch assembly and torque to OEM specifications.

  7. Reattach fan blades

Reattach the fan blades to the new clutch and reinstall the fan shroud.

  8. Reconnect electrical

Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  9. Clear fault code

Clear the ENG 245 fault code using a diagnostic scan tool, start the tractor, and verify that the fan engages properly as engine temperatures rise and that the code does not return.
