New Holland ENG 254 – Engine Control Module (ECM) / ENG: Fuel Shutoff Valve Voltage too low

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected low voltage or an excessive current draw (greater than 2 amps) on the fuel shutoff valve driver circuit. When this fault is active, the ECM cuts power to the fuel shutoff valve, causing the valve to close and the engine to shut down immediately to prevent damage.

   Check ECM power supply fuses (specifically F37 and F38) to ensure they are not blown

   Inspect the engine-to-chassis ground wire to ensure it is securely fastened to a clean, dry, conductive surface

   Check the fuel shutoff supply circuit for any unauthorized splices or external wires powering aftermarket devices that may pull down voltage

   Test the resistance between the fuel shutoff valve terminal post and ground (a healthy solenoid should read between 6 to 15 ohms)

   Inspect the engine harness and connectors for a short circuit to ground, specifically checking the fuel shutoff driver pin (e.g., pin 33 on the actuator harness connector)

   Power Down

   Turn the ignition key to the OFF position and disconnect the battery negative terminal to prevent electrical spikes.

   Remove External Interference

   If any aftermarket wiring or external shutdown systems are spliced into the fuel shutoff circuit, remove them and repair the factory wire.

   Clean Grounds

   Remove the engine-to-chassis ground cable, clean the contact surfaces with a wire brush until bare metal is exposed, and re-secure it tightly.

   Test and Replace the Valve

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the fuel shutoff valve (located near the fuel pump or fuel control block). Measure the resistance of the valve. If it falls outside the 6-15 ohm range, or if it is internally shorted to ground, remove the faulty valve and install a new OEM replacement.

   Validate the Repair

   Reconnect the battery. Turn the keyswitch to the ON position. Start the engine and let it idle for 1 minute.

   Clear Codes

   The fault code status should change to INACTIVE. Use a compatible diagnostic service tool to issue a 'Reset All Faults' command and clear the code from the ECM history.
