New Holland ENG 255 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Engine Fuel Shutoff Valve Driver Circuit - Voltage Above Normal or Shorted to High Source

The ECM detects an open circuit or a short to a voltage source in the fuel shutoff valve circuit. As a result, the fuel shutoff valve may not open when the keyswitch is in the ON position (causing a no-start), or it may fail to close when the keyswitch is turned OFF (preventing the engine from shutting down).

   Check if the vehicle has an aftermarket or external shutdown system installed that is miswired and feeding external voltage into the fuel shutoff supply circuit

   Inspect the engine harness, connectors, and the shutoff valve for an open circuit (broken wires, backed-out pins, or heavy corrosion)

   Using a multimeter, probe the fuel shutoff valve signal wire to check if it is shorted to a voltage source in the harness

   Test the resistance across the pins of the fuel shutoff valve solenoid to verify if the internal coil has failed (open circuit)

   Disconnect battery

   Turn the keyswitch to the OFF position and disconnect the battery to prevent accidental shorts.

   Locate the valve

   Locate the fuel shutoff valve solenoid, which is typically mounted on the fuel delivery housing or injection pump.

   Inspect and clean connector

   Disconnect the electrical connector at the fuel shutoff valve. Inspect the connector for moisture, corrosion, or damaged pins. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Test the wiring

   With the ECM disconnected, use a multimeter to check the continuity of the signal wire from the ECM harness connector to the valve connector. Repair any breaks in the wire.

   Test for shorts

   Check for continuity between the signal wire and the battery positive terminal. If continuity exists, locate and repair the short-to-voltage in the engine harness.

   Replace the valve (if necessary)

   If the wiring harness tests perfectly but the fault persists (or if the solenoid coil tests open), the fuel shutoff valve itself has failed. Unbolt the old solenoid, replace the O-ring/seal, and install the new OEM shutoff valve.

   Verify repair

   Reconnect the battery, turn the keyswitch to ON, and clear the fault codes. Start the engine and then turn the keyswitch OFF to ensure the valve opens and closes properly.
