New Holland ENG 259 – Engine Controller / Engine Control Module (ECM): Fuel Shutoff Valve mechanically stuck open

The engine's electronic control system has commanded the fuel shutoff solenoid valve to close, but the valve's internal plunger or mechanism has physically jammed in the open position. Because it is mechanically stuck, fuel continues to flow, which can result in the engine failing to shut down when the key is turned off, or it can trigger a critical safety/emissions fault.

   Perform an operational test by turning the key switch to the 'RUN' position and then to 'OFF', listening or feeling for the audible 'click' of the fuel shutoff solenoid pulling in and releasing.

   Inspect the fuel filters and fuel lines for debris, dirt, or metal shavings, which are the primary causes of a valve mechanically jamming open.

   Verify that the solenoid's wiring harness is not shorted to power, which could theoretically hold the valve open against the ECM's command.

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent electrical shorts and ensure safety.

   Locate the Valve

   Locate the fuel shutoff solenoid valve, which is typically mounted on the fuel injection pump or the high-pressure fuel inlet.

   Clean the Area

   Thoroughly clean the exterior of the injection pump and the area around the shutoff valve to prevent dirt from entering the fuel system during removal.

   Remove the Solenoid

   Disconnect the electrical harness connector from the valve. Unscrew or unbolt the faulty fuel shutoff valve from its housing.

   Inspect the Bore

   Look inside the mounting bore for any trapped debris, metal flakes, or damaged O-ring material. Clean the bore carefully if necessary.

   Install the New Valve

   Lubricate the new O-ring with clean diesel fuel. Thread the new fuel shutoff solenoid into place and tighten it to the manufacturer's specified torque. Reconnect the electrical harness.

   Bleed the Fuel System

   Open the bleed screw on the fuel pump. Use the hand primer pump to push fuel through the system until air-free fuel flows out. Close the bleed screw securely.

   Test the System

   Reconnect the battery. Start the engine, check for fuel leaks around the new valve, and then turn the key off to verify that the engine shuts down promptly and the ENG 259 code clears.
