New Holland ENG 263 – Engine Controller (Engine ECU / EDC): Fuel Temperature Sensor voltage is too high

Issue description

The engine controller is detecting a signal voltage above 4.9 Volts, which typically points to an open circuit, a disconnected sensor, or a short to power in the sensor wiring. Caution: If the fuel temperature is genuinely too high (or if the system defaults to a high-temperature strategy due to the sensor failure), the injector pump may be damaged because hot fuel loses its lubrication properties.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the fuel temperature sensor connector and the wiring harness leading back to the Engine ECU for disconnected plugs, broken wires, or corrosion.

  2. Using a multimeter and an interface harness, probe the sensor's signal wire (red boot/reference volts) and ground (black boot) to check voltage.

  3. Verify the sensor voltage reading; a normal reading is approximately 2.5 volts (± 0.2V), while a reading above 4.9V confirms the ENG 263 fault condition.

  4. Perform a continuity test between the sensor harness connector and Pin A35 on the Engine Controller to rule out a broken wire in the main harness.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground.

    Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

  2. Locate the Fuel Temperature Sensor.

    Locate the Fuel Temperature Sensor, which is typically threaded directly into the primary fuel system manifold lines or the fuel filter housing.

  3. Disconnect the sensor plug.

    Disconnect the 2-pin sealed oval plug from the sensor.

  4. Remove the faulty sensor.

    If the diagnostic checks proved the wiring is intact but the sensor is internally open/faulty, remove the faulty sensor using a 19.00 mm spanner/wrench. Have a rag ready to catch any residual fuel.

  5. Install the new OEM replacement sensor.

    Install the new OEM replacement sensor (M14 x 1.5 metric pitch threads). Do not overtighten, as it features a hermetically sealed brass casing.

  6. Reconnect the wiring harness.

    Reconnect the wiring harness securely until the locking tab clicks.

  7. Reconnect the battery and clear the fault code.

    Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and use a diagnostic tool (or the machine's onboard display) to clear the inactive ENG 263 fault code.

  8. Start the engine and verify the repair.

    Start the engine and verify that the fuel temperature reads normally and the code does not return.
