ENG 272

New Holland ENG 272 – Engine Control Module (ECM): Front Pumping Control Valve current is high

Issue description

Indicates a short circuit condition where high current is detected on the front pumping control valve return circuit (specifically Pin A21). When this fault is active, the engine will typically experience a power derate, low power, or poor performance, and there is a risk of ECM damage.

Applies to these machines

  • TG Series
  • T8000
  • Magnum tractors

Check the cause

  1. Disconnect the engine harness from the front pumping control valve at the four-pin connector and inspect for bent, broken, pushed back, expanded, or corroded pins, as well as moisture or missing/damaged seals.

  2. Test the engine harness for a short circuit to voltage or ground on the Pin A21 circuit.

  3. Perform a diagnostic click test or cylinder cut-out test to ensure the Valve Close Angle (VCA) does not vary more than 15 degrees crank angle (dca) between the front and rear valves.

  4. Perform an engine stall test using a diagnostic tool; if the engine dies completely when one of the pumping control valves is cut out, the accumulator module has failed.

Repair steps

  1. Clear and Verify

Troubleshoot any other active fault codes first (such as fuel pressure codes) before condemning the accumulator module.

  2. Harness Repair

If the visual inspection or multimeter tests reveal a short in the wiring harness leading to the front pumping control valve, repair or replace the damaged section of the harness.

  3. Accumulator Module Replacement

If the wiring is intact but the valve itself is internally shorted (or fails the cut-out test), the fuel pump accumulator module must be replaced.

  4. Pump Replacement

If the accumulator module replacement does not resolve the issue, or if there is internal mechanical damage (such as a blow-shut condition), the entire CAPS injection pump must be sent to New Holland ReCon for repairs or replaced entirely.
