New Holland ENG 273 – Engine Controller (ENG / ECM): Rear Pumping Control Valve current is low during ‘click test’

Issue description

The engine controller has detected an open circuit or abnormally low current draw on the circuit for the rear pumping control valve. The 'click test' is an automated diagnostic self-test where the controller pulses the valve to verify its electrical integrity.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine Controller and the fuel injection pump for broken wires, chafing, or disconnected plugs

  2. Test the continuity of the wire leading from Engine Controller Pin A15 to the rear pumping control valve on the pump

  3. Test the electrical resistance of the rear pumping control valve coil itself to determine if the internal solenoid has failed (open circuit)

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the machine's battery to prevent electrical damage.

  2. Disconnect wiring harness

    Disconnect the wiring harness at the Engine Controller and at the fuel pump accumulator module.

  3. Repair wiring

    Repair any damaged wiring, loose pins, or corroded connectors found on the Pin A15 circuit.

  4. Address valve assembly

    If the wiring harness is intact but the rear pumping control valve fails the resistance test, the valve assembly must be addressed.

  5. Replace or remanufacture pump module

    Because the rear pumping control valve is an integrated component of the accumulator module on the CAPS fuel injection pump, the standard OEM repair procedure dictates that the pump or accumulator module must be replaced or sent to a New Holland ReCon facility for remanufacturing/repairs.

  6. Reinstall and verify

    Reinstall the repaired/replaced pump module, reconnect the harnesses, clear the active fault codes, and run the engine to verify the repair.
