ENG 276

New Holland ENG 276 – Engine Control Module (ECM / ENG): Injection Control Valve current is out of range.

Issue description

The Engine Control Module (ECM) has detected an open or short circuit in the Injection Control Valve (ICV) stator circuit. The engine will typically start for a few seconds and then sputter, blow white smoke, and die.

Check the cause

  1. Verify low-pressure fuel delivery to the CAPS pump (lift pump output pressure should be above 5 PSI).

  2. Inspect fuel lines from the tank to the CAPS pump for air leaks.

  3. Perform a 'click test' using diagnostic software (CNH EST or Cummins INSITE) to verify if the ICV and pumping control valves are actuating.

  4. Test the ICV stator resistance by measuring between Pin 1 of the ICV connector to chassis ground, and Pin 2 to chassis ground (should be more than 100k ohms).

  5. Inspect the wiring harness at the ECM (specifically Pin A7) for broken wires, and perform a wiggle test on the ICV wires while the engine is running.

  6. Test the transient suppressor by unplugging it to see if the engine starts and stays running (this confirms if the suppressor is causing ICV overcurrent).

Repair steps

  1. Replace Fuel Filters

    Replace the inline fuel filter and the water separator to ensure zero restriction to the CAPS pump.

  2. Replace the Transient Suppressor

    If the suppressor is degraded, it must be replaced. It is highly recommended to replace the transient suppressor anytime the CAPS pump or ICV is replaced, as a bad suppressor will fry the new components.

  3. Replace the ICV Stator

    If the ICV stator fails the resistance test or has internal wire breaks, replace the ICV Stator. It is held onto the ICV body by 4 small bolts and can be replaced separately without replacing the entire CAPS pump.

  4. Replace the CAPS Pump

    If the ICV body is mechanically seized, or the CAPS pump has suffered a catastrophic internal failure, the entire CAPS fuel pump assembly must be replaced.
